Is Unlocking The iPhone Illegal?

An unlocked iPhone could mean a locked up customer. According to Macworld, unlocking the iPhone may be a violation of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), resulting in legal action against the unlockers. As of right now, the threat of legal action is still only a possibility. Intellectual property lawyers are actively debating over what the DMCA actually implies. The general consensus is that the DMCA does, in fact, allow users to unlock their phones for use on any network. What's still unclear is if the DMCA allows a person with the knowledge to unlock a phone to share their method with other people. Most IP lawyers think that this would be legal. The logic behind that is if unlocking the phone is legal, telling someone how to do it should be legal too. It's no more different than telling someone how to tie their shoe.
